Before there was ever Marvel Comics, there was Timely Comics. Timely Comics was created in the late 1930's & 1940's. Captain America was created at Timely Comics by Joe Simon & Jack Kirby, where Namor: Sub-Mariner became known, and the little robot called the Human Torch (not to be confused with the Fantastic Four's Human Torch). Comics back then saw a lot of Namor & Human Torch, and sometimes they even fought against each other. When World War II came about, the Human Torch & Sub-Mariner fought aside each other to defeat the Nazi's. Captain America got his own comic book in 1941. With the war helping sell Captain America comics, he quickly became one of the top characters for Timely Comics.
In the Atomic Age of Comics (1946-1955), Timely changed to westerns, romance, horror, and humorous comics because of the fading popularity in heroes because of the ending of the War. 1944's Miss America & Millie the Model saw the first comic books for women. Patsy Walker's comic run lasted until about 1967, whiel Millie the Model lasted from about 1944 to 1973.
Then came on the westerns with Kid Colt Outlaw (published from 1948-1979). Also Rawhide Kid (1955-1979) and Two Gun Kid (1948-1977), a time travel introduced him in a superhero's world with the Avengers. Later on in the early 50's, Timely changed it's name to Atlas after some publication and distribution restructuring.
